What we collect, and what we do with it

Two kinds of people give us information: practitioners who ask to be listed, and readers who use the site. They are treated differently, and both are set out below.

Last updated: 23 September 2026

Lawyers of Sydney is an editorial directory of Sydney legal practitioners, operated by Jameson Law. The directory does not act for you. This policy describes how the site handles personal information under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

If you ask to be listed

You give us your name, your firm, the public contact details you want published, the areas and languages you work in, and a link to a public page where your credential can be checked. You also create a WordPress account, which stores a username and an email address.

Everything except the account email address is intended for publication — that is the point of a directory entry. The account email address is not published. It is used to sign you in and to write to you about your own submission.

If you are reading the site

You do not need an account to read anything here and we do not ask you for anything. The filters on the directory pass your choices in the page address; they are not stored against you.

The web server keeps request logs, as every web server does. A log line holds an IP address, the page requested, the time, and the browser’s own description of itself. They are used to keep the site up and to investigate abuse.

No analytics package, advertising network, tracking pixel or marketing mailing list is installed on this site. If one is ever added, this page is out of date until it says so, and saying so is part of adding it.

Cookies

WordPress sets a session cookie when you sign in, and a preference cookie when you leave a comment. If you never sign in, no cookie is set by us.

Who else sees it

The editorial team, and the people who host the site, who can technically reach the database as any host can. Nothing is sold, and nothing is given to a third party for their own purposes.

Published listing details are public by definition: they are on a page anyone can read and a search engine can index.

How long it is kept

A published listing is kept while it is published. A removed listing and the moderation record behind it are kept so that we can answer a question about why a decision was made, and are deleted on request unless there is a reason in law to keep them.

Server logs are kept for as long as the host keeps them.

Asking for your information, or complaining

You can ask what we hold about you and ask for it to be corrected. Write to the editorial team through the contact page.

If you are not satisfied with how we handle that, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner, which is independent of us.

Security, honestly stated

The site runs over HTTPS and passwords are stored hashed by WordPress. No website can promise that information sent over the internet is secure, and this one does not.
