Legal aid in Sydney
This page links to official legal assistance services. Lawyers of Sydney is a separate directory operated by Jameson Law, not Legal Aid NSW. Use Legal Aid NSW’s own channels to ask about assistance and its application criteria.
Where to start
- Legal Aid NSW publishes information about the legal problems it covers, available assistance and applications on its own website.
- LawAccess NSW provides legal information and referrals. The Legal Aid NSW contact page gives current telephone and online contact options.
- NSW Courts and Tribunals lists legal help and support services. Court staff can provide procedural information, but cannot give legal advice.
- Community legal centres and Aboriginal legal services are also listed on the NSW Courts legal-help page. Contact the relevant service to ask whether it can assist.
Visiting this page or contacting Lawyers of Sydney does not apply for legal aid or establish eligibility. For private legal services, you can browse the lawyer directory and ask the practitioner about availability and fees.
Before you contact anyone
- Write down what happened, in order, with dates. A short timeline can help explain your enquiry.
- Gather the documents you already have — letters, notices, contracts, messages — rather than describing them from memory.
- If a letter or notice you have received states a date you must do something by, keep it where you can see it and mention it when you make contact.
- Use the Law Society of NSW register to check a solicitor’s practising details. Contact the Law Society if you need help confirming them.
- Ask for costs in writing before any work starts, and ask what the estimate does and does not include.
Official sources
Lawyers of Sydney is operated by Jameson Law. Listings describe individual practitioners and firms; a listing is not a recommendation. This page is general information about a kind of legal work, not legal advice about your situation.
